These are the most predominant dryers in service today. It uses a continuously turning wheel of desiccant that generally provides a very consistent dew point and temperature to the process. However, there are some things you need to know to address issues that you may see.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13b9ccc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"13b9ccc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b><u><span style=\"color: #000080;\">THE DRYER WILL NOT START<\/span><br \/><\/u><\/b>a. <b>Power issues<\/b> \u2013 Is there power getting to the dryer and the dryer controls? This could be because the dryer main circuit breaker or disconnect are not turned on. Check to see if the dryer has the proper power and voltage. If the dryer is getting power but the controls are not, check the control transformers secondary fuse.<\/p><p>b. <b>Alarm Faults <\/b>&#8211; Did the dryer shut sown in an alarm condition? Dryers have safety features that insure they don\u2019t start until there is a corrective action for<br \/>major faults.<\/p><p>c. <b>Phase issues <\/b>\u2013 Is the dryer seeing power on all phases? Is there correct rotation on the blowers? Was there a blower fault such as pulling too many amps?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0d371a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0d371a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b><u><span style=\"color: #000080;\">THE HEATER WILL NOT START<\/span><br \/><\/u><\/b>a. <b>Safety Interlocks<\/b> \u2013 Most process heaters, have an interlock to ensure that the heater does not come on if the process blower is not running.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">b. <\/span><b style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Blower rotation<\/b><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> \u2013 The heater may not start in the event of incorrect blower rotation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">c. <\/span><b style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Flow Switch<\/b><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> \u2013 There may be a flow switch so that the heater doesn\u2019t come on if the air flow is low enough that there could be an overheat condition. This could be caused by dirty filters or clogged lines with fines or volatiles.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f806416 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f806416\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><strong>THE DRYER IS NOT MAKING THE CORRECT DEW POINT<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>a. <b>Return Air Temperature<\/b> \u2013 Most dryers need no more than a 140 F return temperature to the desiccant so that it operates properly. If the return temperature is too high, it can be difficult to make a -40 dew point. It may be necessary to use cooling water at the return air cooling coil.<\/p><p>b. <b>Dew Point Sensor<\/b> \u2013 Generally the dew point sensor needs to be replaced yearly. Ensure it\u2019s in proper working order<\/p><p>c. <b>Desiccant condition<\/b> \u2013 Is there any dust or volatile contamination of the desiccant? If so, replace it.<\/p><p>d. <b>High return<\/b> <b>dew point to the desiccant<\/b>\u2013 There are limits to how much moisture the desiccant can adsorb. If there is excessive moisture coming from the resin (i.e. surface moisture or from excessive hydration) the desiccant may not be able to achieve the required dew point performance.<\/p><p>e. <b>Insufficient regeneration heat or flow<\/b>\u2013<b>\u00a0<\/b>Check your regeneration filters and the regeneration inlet and discharge temperature. If the filters are dirty, replace them? If the inlet temperature is below that specified by the manufacturer, check to see if the heating element is operating properly. If the regeneration exhaust is less than 212 F, the air flow may be insufficient or the resin moisture may be beyond the dryers design limits.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1b23e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1b23e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b><u><span style=\"color: #000080;\">MATERIAL IN THE HOPPER ISN\u2019T DRYING PROPERLY<\/span><br \/><\/u><\/b> a. <b>Dirty filters <\/b>\u2013 If the air flow is reduced,the resin may not dry properly.<\/p><p>b. <b>Hopper Residence Time<\/b> \u2013 Is the hopper sized properly? Different resins require different drying times. Not all resins can be dried in 2-4 hours. This is especially true for resins with a low drying temperature or soft resins that can stick together if the drying temperature is<br \/>elevated.<\/p><p>c. <b>Leaks in the System<\/b> \u2013 The hopper and the conveying system need to be isolated from ambient and each other. Any leaks that can cause the dry air to leave the system should be eliminated. This is also true of hoses and ducting.<\/p><p>d. <b>Incorrect drying temperatures<\/b> \u2013 Try to follow the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations. For instance, not all grades of the same resin class should be dried at the same temperature. (i.e. not all nylon 66\u2019s<br \/>are the same) Also, are all of the elements in the process heater working? At<br \/>times, this can lead to lower than designed drying temperatures.<\/p><p>e. <b>Hopper Level <\/b>\u2013 Is the hopper level being controlled at too low a level for the residence time necessary?<\/p><p>f. <b>Dew Point Performance<\/b> \u2013 There must be a driving force for the resin\u2019s moisture to leave it for the air stream. Is the dryer operating at it should per the previous section? Dew points higher than -40 can indicate that the dryer isn\u2019t performing to specifications.<\/p><p>g. <b>Wheel Speed<\/b> \u2013 Is the wheel rotating at the manufacturer\u2019s specified speed?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae20fa2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae20fa2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\"><b>MATERIAL<\/b><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\"> MELTS OR BECOMES VERY \u201cTACKY\u201d IN THE HOPPER\/ DOES NOT DISCHARGE PROPERLY<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>a. <b>Process Drying Temperature <\/b>\u2013 Has the manufacturer\u2019s recommended drying temperature been exceeded? Most dryers have minimum temperatures that the can operate. Part of this is because there is a temperature rise across the process blower (heat of compression)<br \/>and another rise across the desiccant (heat of adsorption). You may need cooling water prior to the desiccant and\/or following it to achieve the manufacturer\u2019s recommended temperature. This is a typical occurrence with copolyesters and bio-resins.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">b. <strong>Wheel Speed<\/strong> \u2013 Generally high wheel\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">speeds lead to higher discharge temperatures. This is because the time in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">cooling section is reduced. Check your filters and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">consider adding a flow switch alarm if it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">wasn\u2019t provided with the dryer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">d. <strong>Resin type<\/strong> \u2013 Some resin types, like\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">elastomers, have issues with bridging.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Tall hoppers can lead to high pressure\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">on the resin at the bottom of the hoppers, and compression that leads to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">bridging.
