It is simply what the industry has had to work with. The premise was never seriously challenged \u2014 because challenging it takes something almost no one built: a laboratory dedicated to measuring what actually happens inside a dryer and a conveying line, backed by the instruments and the years to do it right.<\/p><p>Twenty years ago, we started building exactly that. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatec.com\/resin-proving-ground\/\">Resin Proving Ground<\/a><\/strong> exists on one conviction: that drying and conveying are not black arts but <strong>sciences<\/strong> \u2014 governed by thermodynamics, diffusion, airflow, bulk density, residence time, and hopper geometry, every one of which can be measured, modeled, and proven. The material is assumed to be at the right level, and no one goes looking for trouble until parts start failing downstream \u2014 by which point the shift is already lost.<\/p><p>But the science of drying is knowable. Moisture in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatec.com\/knowledge-center\/plastic-drying-knowledge-center\/resin-moisture\/\">hygroscopic pellet<\/a> is chemically bound; heat has to break the bond and then the water must diffuse out from the interior, and because plastics conduct heat poorly, that last fraction of moisture takes disproportionately long to leave <a href=\"#src-1\">(Guidelines for Drying PET, Stoughton)<\/a>. Peer-reviewed work confirms the entire drying process of a resin like nylon 6 is mainly controlled by internal diffusion, following Fick\u2019s Law, with an asymptotic \u201ctail\u201d as diffusivity falls toward zero <a href=\"#src-2\">(Suherman et al., NTNU)<\/a>. The only way to know a resin\u2019s true moisture is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatec.com\/knowledge-center\/plastic-drying-knowledge-center\/choosing-the-right-resin-moisture-analyzer\/\">measure the pellet directly<\/a> \u2014 by Karl Fischer titration or loss-on-drying \u2014 not to infer it from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novatec.com\/knowledge-center\/dewpoint-is-a-dryer-output-not-a-resin-readiness-score\/\">dryness of the air<\/a> <a href=\"#src-3\">(The Madison Group)<\/a>. Airflow, bulk density, temperature uniformity, and residence-time distribution each obey physical laws that can be characterized.<\/p><p>That is the founding idea: <strong>if you know what goes in, and you understand the physics, you can predict what comes out<\/strong> \u2014 not plus-or-minus fifty percent, but predicted. The Resin Proving Ground was launched in <strong>2006<\/strong> as a research arm of the company held to a strict method \u2014 published methods, competitive dryers bought on the open market, results reported whether or not they favor Novatec \u2014 a place whose job is to develop, pressure-test, and sometimes disprove theories of conveying and drying <em>before<\/em> they ever reach a customer&#8217;s floor, so the customer is never the test bed. In the twenty years since, it has tested <strong>hundreds of polymers<\/strong> across the full range of materials a plant is likely to run, for both <strong>drying and conveying<\/strong> applications.<\/p><p>None of what the lab can now say would have been possible without its own facility and its own capital.
